After this operation takes place, and before the borrower had checked out his account, the bank’s balance sheet would show an increase in loans & and an increase in deposits equal to $6,000. It will be observed that new demand deposits to the amount of $6,000 have come into being and that the borrower leaves the bank with $6,000 more of potential purchasing power than he had before he entered the bank. Under our assumption he checks out the entire amount of his account. This action does not, however, destroy the potential purchasing power created; on the contrary, it is activated by transferring it to others. The balance sheet of the bank after this operation took place would be minus legal reserves of $6,000 and minus de3mand deposits of $6,000.
