Twitter Enters Online Advertising With Microsoft Deal

High-profile Internet start-up Twitter Inc. said Monday it’s making a foray into online advertising by selling sponsorship of a designated “ExecTweets” site to Microsoft Corp. (MSFT).
Twitter, a relatively young San Francisco-based service that has nonetheless raised at least $55 million in funding and drawn a rapidly growing pool of regular users, announced the advertising initiative on a company Web site.
The move is an answer to critics who have noted that red-hot Twitter hasn’t yet developed a business model to match its popularity. Twitter is used to spontaneously post everything from personal updates and observations to breaking news stories online, using 140 characters or less.
ExecTweets is a page that pulls in a collection of posts, or “tweets,” written by corporate executives, and features branding from Microsoft.
Twitter co-founder Biz Stone wrote on a company Web site that ExecTweets is being operated by online advertising firm Federated Media.
“Twitter is contacted regularly by brands interested in sponsoring innovative experiences based on topics of interest,” Stone wrote. “However, our focused commitment to Twitter itself means we don’t have much time or resources to build these interesting topical experiences.”
